Singapore – Going Green in Supermarkets

AlterPacks partnered with Freshmart, a leading supplier of fruits and vegetables in Singapore, to introduce compostable packaging into the supermarket produce aisle. The pilot began with Korean paprikas, replacing styrofoam trays and cellophane wrap with AlterPacks’ containers made from upcycled spent grains. It later expanded to the Candine organic apples range, where traditional plastic containers were replaced with the Harvest Hold container.

Over 80,000 units of AlterPacks’ Harvest Hold container have been supplied to support this shift from plastic to home compostable packaging. This initiative marks the application of AlterPacks’ material in fresh produce, extending its use beyond foodservice into supermarket retail. Transparent plastic wraparounds remain in use due to display requirements, highlighting ongoing challenges and opportunities in the move toward fully sustainable produce packaging.

Indonesia – Tackling Hospital Plastic Waste

AlterPacks, winner of the United Nations Development Programme ASEAN Blue Innovation Challenge, concluded a three-month pilot project in Indonesia by March 2025, tackling the urgent issue of medical plastic waste. Plant-fiber based kidney trays were deployed into Indonesian medical institutions, with the goal to help reduce the environmental impact of marine plastic pollution in the region.

Building upon this, we further innovated by developing bio-pellets from locally sourced coconut shell powder, creating materials compatible with injection molding machines for wider-scale, sustainable plastic alternatives. Over 600 of the initial kidney trays were implemented, demonstrating a crucial step towards minimizing healthcare-related plastic waste and highlighting the versatility of AlterPacks' solutions across diverse industrial applications.

Vietnam – The Double Decker

Stemming from a pilot project with Pizza 4P's in Vietnam, AlterPacks developed the innovative Double Decker food container. This design, featuring a separable base and tray for efficient food item segregation, showcased the potential for enhanced food packaging solutions. While the initial application evolved, the Double Decker's unique features and practicality quickly gained traction in other markets, leading to its emergence as a top-selling product for AlterPacks.

This successful commercialization underscores our ability to translate pilot projects into impactful, market-leading innovations, demonstrating the adaptability and value of our sustainable packaging solutions.

Indonesia – End Plastic Pollution Innovation Challenge (EPPIC)

Having won the End Plastic Pollution Innovation Challenge (EPPIC) 2021, AlterPacks in 2022 worked on a 9-month feasibility study with the United Nations Development Programme, to help combat plastic pollution in the Mandalika area of Lombok, Indonesia. Alterpacks food containers piloted at the Motor GP Event in Mandalika in March 2022. The team continues to collaborate with the local community and representatives from the region to look at viable solutions using agricultural waste to replace plastic containers.
